Pharmacist Approved Skin Care Routine: Ingredients for Better Skin

When it comes to taking care of our skin, it's important to choose products that are not only effective but also safe. As a pharmacist, I understand the importance of using the right ingredients in our skincare routine. In this blog post, I will share a pharmacist-approved skin care routine and explain what each ingredient does on a biochemical level to give you better skin.

Cleanser: The Foundation of Your Skincare Routine

The first step in any skincare routine is cleansing. A good cleanser removes dirt, oil, and impurities from the skin, without over stripping the skin of its natural oils. Look for cleansers that contain gentle surfactants like Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate or Cocamidopropyl Betaine. These ingredients effectively cleanse the skin and are safe to use daily.

For acne prone skin, I would recommend a cleansers contain Salicylic Acid or Glycolic Acid. Salicylic Acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) which exfoliate the skin, unclog pores, and helps reduce acne. The exfoliating effects will also improve skin texture and tone. Use them a few times a week and work your way up to daily to avoid irritating your skin.

Toner: Balancing and Prepping the Skin

Toners help balance the skin's pH levels and provide hydration. Look for toners that contain ingredients like Witch Hazel or Rosewater. Witch Hazel is a natural astringent that helps tighten the skin and reduce inflammation. Rosewater, on the other hand, is not only anti-inflammatory but also soothing and hydrating, leaving your skin refreshed. (DOI: 10.1248/bpb.b16-00644)

Some toners also contain Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3. Niacinamide helps regulate oil production, minimizes the appearance of pores, and improves skin barrier function. It's a multitasking ingredient that can benefit all skin types. (DOI: 10.1111/j.1473-2130.2004.00115.x)

Serum: Targeting Specific Skin Concerns

Serums are lightweight, quick to soak in, and packed with all the good stuff your skin craves. Unlike your regular moisturizers that just focus on surface hydration, serums get down to business tackling specific skin issues like aging, dark spots, and pesky breakouts.

But with so many serums out there, it can feel like a jungle trying to figure out which one is right for you. Here are some superstar ingredients to keep an eye out for when you're on the hunt for your perfect serum:

Vitamin C: We all love a good Vitamin C boost for our skin, it is known for helping with hyperpigmentation and fine-lines and wrinkles. But let's be real, Ascorbic Acid is easy degraded by light, air and change in PH. Not to mention it can be irritating to more sensitive skin types. That's why I opt for alternative Vitamin C forms like magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (MAP) or Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP). They're more stable and gentler on your skin. My latest obsession? Mad Hippie's vitamin C serum with 10% SAP. It's a total game-changer, reducing sebum oxidation by up to 40%. Translation? Say goodbye to acne and inflammation (a benefit you won't get from Ascorbic Acid alone). Talk about a win-win situation! (Source: DOI:10.1111/j.1467-2494.2005.00263.x)

Hyaluronic Acid: The ultimate hydration boost! This lightweight formula locks in moisture, smooths wrinkles, and leaves your skin glowing. (DOI:10.1007/s13555-021-00566-0). Suitable for all skin types, it's available in many different products, even in the Mad Hippie serum I mentioned. But if you're looking for a stand alone product I recommend Cerave Hyluronic acid serum.

Remember, when using serums, always follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer and of course talk to your dermatologist.

Moisturizer: Hydrating and Protecting the Skin

Picking a non-irritating moisturizer is a vital step. Always avoid any moistures with fragrances as these can cause irritation and, if used long term, hyperpigmentation. Moisturizers should be applied at least daily. Working in the pharmacy, many dermatologists recommend Glacial Base Cream as it is a bare-bones moisturizer that is non-irritating, fragrance free and non-greasy. It can be used on the face and body.

Sunscreen: Protect from UV

Arguably the most important step: SPF (Sun Protection Factor) to protect the skin from harmful UV rays. Sunscreen is essential for preventing premature aging and reducing the risk of skin cancer. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and apply it generously to all exposed areas of your skin. And yes even on cloudy days in the winter, you need SPF protection. My favourite to wear under makeup is the SuperGoop Unseen Sunscreen 40 SPF, but for my no makeup days I go for a basic Neutrogena Dry-Touch Ultra-Sheer Face and Body SPF 70.

Take Away

Remember, consistency is key when it comes to skincare. Stick to your routine and give your skin time to adjust to the new products. Investing in your skin is an investment in your overall well-being.

These are recommendations that have worked well for me and my patients but it important to always consult your healthcare provider for your unique skincare concerns!
